Halloween Advice from the AMA

(CHICAGO) -- Halloween is this Saturday. While Americans plan for fun. ...the doctors of the American Medical Association warn this holiday can also pose a danger not only to children but to adults as well -- if they drink too much.

For those adults whose Halloween celebrations will include alcohol, the AMA recommends that:

-- If you're hosting a party, provide non-alcoholic drinks and plenty of food.

-- Under no circumstances should you drink and drive.

-- If you plan to drink, appoint a designated driver who will not drink.

Those who're driving on Halloween must be aware of children out trick-or-treating. CDC figures show child pedestrian deaths are four times higher on Halloween evening than on any other evening during the year.

The AMA notes that injuries related to Halloween happen primarily after dark...when dark costumes or masks limit motorists' and children's ability to see each other...or when youngsters dart out between cars or stray from sidewalks.
